We all know shredders exist and we know what they are used for, but do you ever stop to wonder what could happen to you and your identity if you didn’t bother to shred your documents and letters you no longer need? Maybe you can try and understand how a criminal thinks about it. This is why you need to shred important documents to stop identity theft.

You may think that important letters like ones from your bank or store card company are the only ones you need to shred but that’s not always the case. Think about that criminal, what do they even want with your information, the answer is pretty simple, its anything they can gain to pretend to be you and steal your identity.

Think back to those important letters, what about the unimportant ones, the ones you don’t even like or want, so you pick them off the mat or from your box and put them right in that trash can, simple yes? No!! You’ve just helped a criminal, those special offer loans letters sometimes have your personal details pre-filled and for a criminal this means they’ve just been dealt an ace!

So now you know just how easy it can be to harvest your personal information and steal your identity you know that you need to shred and destroy everything with your personal details on it including any junk mail or unsolicited mail that you didn’t want in the first place. Also protect those who can’t protect themselves, I’m talking of your children, criminals don’t have hearts and will steal anyone’s ID even our young ones.

So once the criminal has got your information what do they do with it? Well they can do all manner of things including getting items on hire purchase with no intention of ever making the payments. So who gets the calls and letters for overdue payment? That’s right, you do!

The cell phone network would then start to hunt you down to make you pay for this and if you don’t have some kind of legal protection which most of us don’t for this kind of crime then you may find yourself having to foot the bill or even worse end up in a court of law.

A lot of people think that scribbling out your name or tearing up a letter means that you’re covered but you’ll be very much mistaken, these thieves are very handy when it comes to piecing together torn up letters. People did used to burn but shredding is a far easier way of protecting you and your family and giving you the satisfaction that you’ve headed the thief off at the pass.

So the reasons are there, all you need to do now is hunt down a good reliable shredder and make sure that you use it, no point getting one and letting it sit pretty, make sure to use it and that your family use it too. This will all make it so you’re aware of how important it is to keep your identity safe.
