We all like to look back at the good old times, when live was easy and grilled chicken were falling from the sky. Those were the times when you could leave your front door unlocked and the keys in your car. You didn’t need to worry about somebody stealing your identity. But unfortunately these times, if they ever existed, have passed. Today you need to know how to protect your identity and you should learn how cross cut paper shredders protect against identity theft.

Paper shredders are mostly small electrical machines that have one or two sets of knives to cut documents in either strips or pieces. The cheaper versions are the strip cutters, they cut your paper in strips as the name suggests. More expensive but also more valuable are so called cross cut paper shredders. They turn your documents into confetti.

While it sure is a nuisance trying to recover documents that have been cut in little strips, all an identity thief needs to do is find your social security number or account number. With a little determination it will probably only take a few minutes to find these numbers in document that have only been cut to strips.

How easy it is to recover documents that has been cut into strips even the United States embassy had to learn the hard way. In 1979 during the Iran crisis, when fanatics took over the American Embassy, the desperate embassy employees only had strip cutters available to try to destroy all the critical documents. Although nobody knows how long it took the Iranians top piece them back together it undoubtedly was great victory for Iranian intelligence.

Cross cut paper shredders cut the documents as the name suggests in two directions, one set of knifes cut the paper into strips, while a second set of knifes cut the strips into little snipplets. A one page document can become thousands of pieces the size that each snipplet only covers individual letters.

Of course with enough time and effort you probably would be able to still recover the original documents from these little pieces, but that is more in the realm of the spy agencies and not your typical criminal. The fraudster is looking for easy victims and as long as there are some many available they won’t bother with your confetti.

Sure it is always better to at least cut the paper in to strips prior to throwing away, but if you want to protect your valuable good name, spend the extra money to buy the right tool for the job.

Just think about how much it would cost you to recover the losses and rebuild your life and credit score after your identity has been ruined by fraudsters. Doesn’t that justify to do the right thing and buy a machine that can really protect you?

Identity theft is threatening millions of people and you are one of them. Nobody is safe. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, if you won a house or just renting. If the criminal gets a hold of your information you will be his next victim. Don’t take a chance with your life and your family and find out how cross cut paper shredders protect against identity theft.
