Identity theft is that of a different nature than stolen property. Numbers and letters that identify where you’ve been and what you have access to getting stolen can mean a whole world of trouble that most victims never see coming. However, as with any problem, the sooner it is caught, the better, and here are some warning signs you may not have thought about that suggest you may need help for identity theft.

Curious Parcel

If you receive a small package in the mail, maybe a CD or a computer disc, chances are someone is testing to see if a transaction will go through. Crooks will often be willing to spend a small amount of money or time finding gadgets or free offers to see if a bigger one will be available.

Offers

Because credit card companies sell contact and mailing information, one hit to your credit will usually start mass mailings. If you start receiving an inordinate amount of credit card offers and deals in the mail, it may be time to check in with your credit, and make absolutely sure you are the only one applying for anything under your name.

Missing Money

Sometimes when people are used to seeing a lot of money flow in both directions, they don’t scrutinize as carefully as they should. Paypal uses one- and two-cent transactions to verifying accounts, which is unnoticed by the naked eye, but a definite warning sign.

What do I do?

Make three calls: one to the bank, one to the credit bureau, and one to a lawyer. When going against credit card companies, it is very important to know your rights and have proof. You will have to account for all of the transactions as well as where you were when transactions you are claiming were not you took place.

Identity theft can be paralyzing, but it doesn’t have to be. Keep an eye on your personal finances, and watch for oddities. Knowing early keeps the power and control in your hands.
